Outdoor Learning & Experiences for Urban Children
USING THE GREAT OUTDOORS TO FOSTER ACADEMIC AND SOCIAL SUCCESS

Apr 29, 2003

Banquet Saturday, May 17th 6:00 p.m.

There is still time to get your Camp Compass Celebration tickets. This event raises a bulk of our funding for the children we work with. We are looking for someone to sponsor at least 12 of our less fortunate students at $15.00 each so they may attend the dinner as well. Adult tickets are $30.00. There will be a family style dinner, live & silent auctions and lots of other goodies. Call 610 -767-3821 or email
info@campcompass.org for orders.

Are YOU a member?

We see so many people standing up for what they believe in. Here's your opportunity to stand up for giving children the right to pursue interests outside of the concrete jungle they live in. For a modest $20.00 you can prove you care about providing quality education and new opportunities for urban children. This small contribution will allow students to receive much needed academic tutoring, socialization lessons and provide traveling expenses to the many wonderful places we get invited to. There is nothing wrong with helping, so

Our First Open House

Our
Academy had its first student open house and it turned out to be a tremendous success. Attending families were given a tour by one of our upper level students and then interested
parents were able to register their child for our programs. Believe it or not we filled our allotted spaces in three hours and many parents were so impressed with the program that they signed up their siblings. The event also gave some community supporters the chance to see our offerings and by their comments we should be very proud of our work. We want to thank
PENN PIZZA and The KEINERT FAMILY for providing the food. All in all, we were very pleased with this event and we are planning a bigger supporter event at our facility September 6th 2003. Watch for more
information.

Exotic Ram Hunt

Two of our Travel Team members were rewarded for their hard work by PTA Taxidermist Tony Heisy and Steve Mohr. They were awarded with a hunt with each girl harvesting a remarkable ram. After a short boat ride the girls, mentors and guides were off. Natasha was to use a .308 that was given to her by her grandfather before he passed away and Jenna was to still hunt with her bow. The new grown foliage made it tremendously difficult to get around but our girls managed very well. In fact, it was said that our two girls hunted as well as or better than a lot of previous grown ups who had this opportunity. The girls didn't complain once even
though there was a fresh hatch of spider webs between every tree and they had to go through them. You can go to the
for kids only portion of our website and click stories to read both girls field reports on their wonderful opportunity. It was quite an emotional day and were are grateful to Steve and Tony for the opportunity. We are very proud of are girls efforts in the field and in the classroom!

Youth Turkey Hunt

Once again
Pine Hill Farm was gracious enough to host the opening day of Turkey season for two of our children. Dianna Martin and Justin Keinert had a great opportunity to chase Pennsylvania's most respected game bird. Both students were chosen based on their dedication to our programs and for their increasing grade point averages. Although the weather put a damper on the season opener it didn't prevent the children from trying. As luck would have it we did get something - WET & COLD. Sometimes you just can't compete with Mother Nature.

Ned Smith Center Partners with Us!
Recently, we were able to form a partnership with
The Ned smith Center. After addressing our curriculum needs we found Ned smith's Sketchbook a perfect match for our students' needs. We approached the center and they agreed that urban children would benefit greatly from this book. Through their center they were able to donate a complete set of texts (30) and are allowing us to use it as our primary resource book. We want to thank the Ned Smith Center for making our academic curriculum stronger. We are certain our students will gain the much needed outdoor background knowledge they lack from this generous contribution.

An Outdoor Chanel Honor

Recently, our good friends at
The Outdoor Channel spotlighted our work. John Annoni, was given the guest editorial honor. If you would like a copy of the full color program guide and article to see and share with your friends or potential supporters they will be given out at our banquet on May 17th or we can mail you a copy. This is our best produced written piece to date and it really makes a statement. After the article there is a section that names 12 country wide organizations that deal with youth and the outdoors and we are among them. Not bad for a program that wasn't given much of a chance to succeed!
