Academy Report

The beginning of a new school year is a very busy time for the Academy staff. Thanks to Chad Groover and Diane Ising our new reporting booklets have been revised. Students must report weekly in these booklets to be eligible for the reward trips. In addition, we have partnered with the Ned Smith Center and Chad Groover developed curriculum to supplement their donated class set of Ned Smith's Sketchbook. We pride ourselves in the time commitment we share with our children and are anxious to share in their successes both in an out of the traditional classroom.

YOUTH PHEASANT HUNT

On September 13th we had our annual youth pheasant hunt at Larry Bittner's Wild Wings Farm in Kempton, PA. They day greeted us with gray skies and anticipated down pours. This did not stop our thirteen young gunners from pursuing the wily ring neck pheasant. With ten dog handlers and another thirty- four mentors and friends we set out to give our youth hunters an experience they would never forget. Below are pictures of the event. What makes this outing even more special is that this is a group of "non traditional hunters." Most hunts are done with parents taking their children to this type of event. All of the students pictured are inner city students that have met strict criteria to be able to attend and would have no other way to hunt if not for our programs. You can go to our site and read the students' field reports an educational requirement for all students that participated. http://www.campcompass.org/forkidsonly.html

STEP OUTSIDE PARTNERSHIP

STEP OUTSIDE Partners with the Camp Compass Academy WHAT IS STEP OUTSIDE? (taken from a guide for partners)

STEP OUTSIDE is based on a simple concept that is backed by market research. STEP OUTSIDE is a call to action to the more than 50 million outdoorsmen and outdoorswomen to invite a newcomer to STEP OUTSIDE and introduce him/her to target shooting, archery, hunting or fishing. We know that it takes a hunter to make a hunter, an angler to make an angler, an archer to make an archer, and a target shooter to make a target shooter. We partnered with STEP OUTSIDE for our annual youth pheasant hunt and what an event it turned out to be. Go to the Youth Pheasant Hunt Portion of this newsletter for more. Just imagine.. If every one of the more than 50 million outdoorsmen and outdoorswomen introduced annually one newcomer to either target shooting, archery, hunting or fishing, what a difference it will make. Millions more will understand that these are wholesome activities that provide benefits both to the individual participating in the activity, and to the management and conservation of our fish and wildlife.

DEER HUNT WITH LONG TINE OUTFITTERS

For the past five years we have started our hunting season with our youth deer hunt. This year the tradition continued. As usual, it was a journey that had us traveling Friday after school with six nontraditional hunters and deserving students belonging to our academy. This trip was to a very special one for six of our hard working students. The morning greeted us with gray skies and of course the anticipation of rain. Needless to say our students put on the rain gear and off they went pursuing the elusive whitetail deer. Lady Luck smiled on our students with them all connecting on mature doe. The deer were processed and donated to local food banks in the Pittsburgh area (to date we estimate that we have fed over 5,500 meals to the less fortunate with our harvests). In return, the Pennsylvania Taxidermy Association will continue to support our children by providing a custom mount by a participating member of their organization. Look for that story in the April newsletter. Special thanks to Long Tine Outfitters, The Pennsylvania Taxidermy Association, Donny Beaver, Dave Butler Sr. & Jr., Don Small and Mike Harpster.

Congratulations John Annoni

Recently, John Annoni was awarded The Victor Steckle Award presented by the Lehigh County Fish And Game Protective Association. Lured to the surprise ceremony by his wife Annette, John was recognized for his conservation work with children and given the award by Whitey Lerch the organization's president. It was a total suprise and John's face said it all. After the ceremony John had a welcomed chance to fish with his son, Landon, in LCF&G's annual trout tournament. Congratulations on adding another recognized award to your list, John.

OPEN HOUSE

On September 6th, the Camp Compass Academy had its first official open house. More than 200 hundred supporters showed up. They were treated to a tour of our tutoring center and briefed by an upper level student on what a typical after school hours session includes. Then we had a BB-Q chicken dinner sponsored by Miller's BBQ Service and Coke-Cola. In addition, our guests were able to preview thirty plus prints that will be available for auction. (go to auction section of the newsletter for more details) on October 9th. Many supporters commented on our work. In fact, one prominent visitor responded "What's happening at this Academy should be spread to communities everywhere. In my thirty years of outdoor related business, I have never seen anything like you have here. You are so far a head of the times we may not see another system like this for another 50 years." This is a testament to our hard work. If you were unable to make our open house but would still like a tour please email dising@campcompass.org to schedule your visit.
